It all starts with checking your bills.
Make sure you get all pages of all invoices from your water utility. If your strata managing agent receives them, request that a copy is always sent to the treasurer. They can still be paid automatically – but you should always check them.
Some simple checks can yield positive results:
- Is the invoice for your strata scheme?
With the sheer volume of invoices that managing agents deal with every day, it’s inevitable that mistakes will happen. At some stage, you’re likely to be paying another scheme’s bill!
- Is the invoice for your water meter(s)?
Check that the owners corporation is responsible for the meters listed.
- Are you paying for actual or estimated usage?
If you’re getting estimated readings, there may be a problem with access to your water meter(s). Ask your water utility why this is happening, and take any necessary steps to resolve the issue.
- Are you paying late payment fees or interest on overdue amounts?
Have a chat to your strata managing agent about paying bills on time. If it’s a regular occurrence, take steps to rectify the problem.
